Hōfuku-ji  Three-tiered Pagoda

Hōfuku-ji – Sketch of the Three-tiered Pagoda

The three-tiered pagoda of Hōfuku-ji Temple is designated as an Important Cultural Property.
The existing pagoda is believed to have been built during the Nanboku-chō period (1337–1392).
Stone steps lead up to the pagoda, with maple trees and satsuki azaleas lining both sides. Behind them, red pines and cypress trees form a natural backdrop, creating a solemn and dignified atmosphere around the pagoda.

Hōfuku-ji  Buddha Hall and Maple Trees

Hōfuku-ji – Sketch of the Buddha Hall and Maple Trees

Hōfuku-ji Temple is a famous Zen temple of the Rinzai sect, Tōfuku-ji school.
It is well known for zazen meditation, the painter Sesshū, and its beautiful maple trees.
Various types of maple trees are planted along the south side of the Buddha Hall. Together with tall trees such as cypress in the background, they create gentle shade that helps moss grow on the ground.
The harmony of the Buddha Hall, the maple trees, and the moss creates a calm and peaceful scene. This quiet atmosphere is what I find especially appealing.
